Dog Volunteer Orientation: November
Tuesday, November 8, 2022
How old do I have to be to volunteer?
To volunteer alone with dogs you must be 16 years of age or older. Children younger than 16
may volunteer with an adult as a “junior volunteer.” If you are under 16 and wish to volunteer
with dogs, you must attend orientation and training with the adult who will be volunteering with
you.
It is also important to note that junior volunteers may not hold the leash/walk the dog. The adult
who attends training will be the primary dog handler.
When can I volunteer?
You can choose when you come to volunteer. We have a sunrise shift from 6:30am-8:30am
Monday through Sunday. After that, dog walking shifts are in two hour increments between
10am and 6pm Monday through Friday and 10am-3pm on Saturday and Sunday. We do ask
that any volunteer who signs up to train is willing to work a minimum of one shift per week.
What do volunteers do?
Volunteer duties include walking dogs, socializing dogs, helping adopters find their perfect pet,
working adoption events and just providing lots of love to the dogs in our care. We walk dogs
rain or shine, in hot or freezing temperatures, and 365 days a year.
How do I start?
Come to one of our monthly orientations! Dates and times are listed below. You do not need to
sign-up or register in advance.
Each orientation is a three-part commitment and all three are required.
1) Group orientation (dates below)
2) Small Group Orientation - This session is typically held on the Saturday or Sunday on
the weekend immediately following group orientation. There will be several sessions
available over the course of the weekend, but you are only required to attend one. This
session will be approximately 1-1.5 hours long. This is not a hands-on session.
3) After your small group orientation, you will sign-up for hands-on training. There will be
several dates and times available. You will be handling and walking dogs during this
session, so please dress accordingly. After your hands-on training, you will be able to
sign-up to volunteer.
Where is orientation?
Orientation and training are held at the center, located at 1006 Grigsby Hayes Court in Franklin.
