Do they need help improving their reading skills in a non-traditional, non-judgmental environment?
If you said yes to at least one of these questions, then Book Buddies might be the perfect program for you!
Purpose: Book Buddies is a reading program for shelter cats and kids (ages 5 to 10). The purpose of this program is to create a positive relationship between shelter animals and children that benefit both parties. Research in this area has shown that when children read to animals, it has numerous positive benefits, including increased vocabulary and retention, as well as making reading a pleasurable experience. In regards to animal participants, research has shown that reading to shelter animals has a positive impact to animals as well, providing socialization, and potentially decreasing the stay the animals have in the shelter environment.
How does the Book Buddies program work?
After you and your child go through our one-time orientation you may bring your child to read to our cat residents anytime during our cat volunteer hours, Monday-Friday, 10AM-6PM, Saturday, 10AM-3PM, and Sunday 10AM-4PM. Our Holiday schedule for cat volunteers is 10AM-2PM. For the safety of the residents and your child, you must be with your child at all times while in our building. You may bring your own books, or you may use any of the books provided in Purr Palace, our free-roaming cat room! Please complete the form below and submit it. You may also send an email to markB@williamson-tn.org to set up a training time.
